Here at Charles & Ivy, we care so much about creating wildlife-friendly products and encouraging the free roaming of nature’s tiny creatures.
To you, your fence is that stunning addition to your garden that elevates your space and creates envy for all who see it. But to small animals, it’s a barrier to survival and something that could cause more harm than you may think. So, that’s why we’re on a mission to help British wildlife in every way possible and create animal-friendly fencing for both humans and wildlife to enjoy.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) Charity found that between the 1970s and 2019, there had been a decrease in the number of wildlife species within Britain. UK mammals had been hit hard, with a supposed 26% of species being at risk of disappearing altogether.
One issue that many species face is limited access to natural habitats. Urban development is a major cause of this problem, with the addition of new homes and roads to our landscape ultimately creating an obstacle to creatures' everyday activities, from finding food or water to sourcing habitats and even mating. However, there are steps you can follow to prevent this damage from becoming even worse.
All of Charles & Ivy’s composite panels can be cut down without compromising their structural integrity to make the perfect highway hole for hedgehogs and other wildlife. It’s an effortless and quick task on your behalf, but one that could save the lives of many creatures who decide to traverse the landscape around your home.
We have a step-by-step video to help you achieve your own wildlife-friendly passageway, but here’s a short breakdown of what you can do:
- Remove your fence slats from your concrete or aluminium posts.
- Draw a stencil to guide you on where to cut the hole.
- Cut your hole using any standard wood cutting tools. Wipe away any mess and ensure there are no sharp edges where you’ve cut.
- Restack your fence, ensuring the highway hole is at the bottom and is large and visible enough to allow free roaming.
As well as providing passageways for wildlife, purchasing our composite fences can do wonders for the environment. You don’t need to paint, stain, or varnish composite wood, all of which leak damaging chemicals into the ground, thus causing harm to animals’ habitats.
We’re taking many steps to help you to create a wildlife-friendly fencing solution. So, say hello to your new garden guests and join us in supporting the welfare of our little friends.
